Pediatric Ophthalmology refers to the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders, especially in children. The scope for research in this field is high because the treatment modalities and protocols differ entirely from that of the elderly. The diseases affecting the pediatric vision includes Genetic eye diseases, pediatric uveitis, developmental abnormalities and more. There are many genetic diseases that need at most concern during the early stage. Amblyopia is a disease which happens because of the reduced vision in an eye which hasn’t received adequate use during early childhood. The symptoms include tilting the head, poor depth perception and improper movements of the eye.

Session on: Neuro-Ophthalmology

Neuro-Ophthalmology is a segment of ophthalmology that concentrates on the neurological problems related to the eye. It is a combination of neurology and ophthalmology. The process of seeing an image includes, eye capturing the image, transmits it to the brain and the brain solving it as images. Nerve transmits the impulse both from the eye to brain and from the brain to eye. Thus the nerve damage could cause vision impairment and could also lead to damages that cannot be repairable. Neuro-ophthalmology anchors on diseases of the nervous system the affects the vision and pupillary reflexes.

Session on: Visual Neuroscience

Visual Neuroscience gives a broad spectrum for higher brain functioning studies. The two main features of visual neuroscience would include the working of brain mechanisms which encodes information about the colour, motion, depth, form of visual objects and scenes and the other feature is decoding the information to experience perceptual and visually guided action. This is one of the important field in ophthalmology which could reveal the reason for many eye disorders.

Session on: Ophthalmic genetics and Gene therapy

Gene therapy is an exploratory technique that employs genes to treat or prevent diseases. In near future, this technique may include a doctor replacing the mutated gene with a healthy copy of the gene to the patient in order to cure the abnormalities instead of surgery or drugs. Ophthalmic genetics is a branch of ophthalmology which refers to the field where the genetic background of disease is researched. Leber Congenital Amaraius(LCA) is a hereditary genetic disease that causes childhood blindness. Scientists and doctors have treated this disease with the help of gene therapy.

Diabetic retinopathy is a condition that affects the blood vessels of the light-sensitive tissue at the retina of the eye. At first, Diabetic retinopathy causes no symptoms or mild vision problems but eventually, it could cause blindness. The symptoms include blurred vision, patches or streaks that blocks the vision, sudden and total loss of vision.

           Session on: Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a disease that damages the optic the nerve of the eye. It generally develops when fluids develop in the front part of the eye. The fluid will increase the intraocular pressure in the eye damaging the cranial nerve – two. The condition may be diagnosed by assessing the back of the eye for optic nerve injury or by knowing the intraocular pressure of the eye. The risk factors of glaucoma like age, hereditary risk cannot be prevented.

Session on: Retinal and Eye disorders

Retinal disorders are the root causes of many other disorders in ophthalmology. The retina is the part of the eye that senses lights and sends an impulse to the brain. Retinal disorders damage this vital tissue. This can affect vision and some can be serious enough to cause blindness. Retinal detachment is a medical emergency, where the retina is pulled from the back of the eye. AMD is a disease linked with ageing that gradually eliminates central visionA cataract is a covering of the lens in the eye. The vision appears blurry in a cataract patient. Diabetic eye diseases are caused due to the rise in blood sugar level. Glaucoma is another group of disease that could cause damage to the eye’s optic nerve.

Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension is a syndrome which is identified by elevated intracranial pressure around the brain. It’s a complicated disorder that prevails only in children and women who’re being stout and obese in the childbearing stages. An increase in the CSF would cause Optic nerve damage and swelling resulting in a condition called papilledema. The symptoms include optic atrophy leading to blindness and severe headache. As the symptoms match to brain tumour it’s also called as ‘false brain tumour’ in ophthalmology.
